We have been enjoying other people's blogs tonight. It is fun to hear about funny conversations with children. It is also not so funny to read about bitter people. Someone we know wrote about a time that people tried to be nice and they decided to be offended instead. Mission accomplished.
Am I sounding bitter? :)

The Day of Rest
Crazy weekend! We started re-roofing the house last weekend. Just in time for the deluge on Memorial Day. We also discovered that we needed to re-attach the covered patio back on to the house before it collapsed and killed someone. The patio part was done during the deluge. We finished the roof yesterday afternoon.
Here is a list of supplies:
22 squares of shingles, 38 sheets of OSB wood, lots of nails, a full can of tar, about 8 rolls of tar paper, 3 rolls of ridge venting, 3 packs of hip/ridge shingles, lag bolts and angle iron for the patio, lots of pizza and tacos, friends and family.
Peace of mind? Priceless
After the roof, we started tearing out the bathroom where the roof leaked.
Today is the Sabbath - the day of rest. Thank you for that.

Time gets away from me...

It has been almost 2 years since I wrote last. This is as bad as my hard copy journal.
I have changed jobs since my last post. I have graduated from the world of the vampires and now work days. I am now a sysadmin for a Coca-Cola bottler. It is keeping me very busy.
The kids are growing up - I know have 2 teenagers and one of them is getting ready to drive! Ouch!. My baby turned five and is starting kindergarten this year. To add insult to injury, I turned 40! Oh, the misery.
Today was Memorial Day. I normally love this holiday. I served for 6 years in the Air National Guard and love to find time to think about those that served and made the ultimate sacrifice for my country. I haven't found the time yet. I think I need to sign off and go spend some time being grateful.

Summertime and the living is crazy
Is this how it is for everybody else? Between Scout camps for 2 of the boys, swimming lessons for all 5, piano lessons for 3, and violin lessons for 1 who has time for a life? We also do monthly camping trips for the Scouts and a long weekend camp for each side of the family. I think hectic is the word I am looking for.
I also work nights and try to sleep during the day. Summer is always a challenge that way. My bedroom is on the main floor and I need to keep the door open for the air conditioning to work. It gets up to around 100 degrees F in Utah during the summer. The open door also lets in the noise of the kids playing and practicing their music. I have a room in the basement that is cooler. I can close the door there, but it is right under the piano (3 kids practicing) and is right next to the stairs from the main floor - they lead to the playroom (with the Nintendo). I have taken to sleeping with my iPod on to drown out the noise. That can't be good for my dreams! ;)
I look forward to school being back in session because of the order it imposes on our family, but I miss the time that I have been spending with the wife and kids. What a strange paradox.

Time flies - are we having fun yet?
I didn't realize that it had almost been a year since I posted. Life has really been interesting in the last year.
I am getting grayer almost by the day... :) I just turned 38. My health is about the same as last year, but I am trying to get it under control.
By way of health, my wife had open heart surgery about 8 weeks ago - she had a bad valve that was causing her heart to swell. It looks like everything is even better than it was 6 months ago, but it has been a very stressful time (to say the least).
Spring has come and so has my allergies! If my hay fever is any indication, it should be a very interesting year! :) I hope not too interesting....
I graduate with my BS degree in two weeks. I am really excited to finally complete this step. I finished my AS degree in 1994. I feel like I have been a professional student. I was going to a traditional community college with plans to transfer to a state school, but that didn't work with my work and family life. I ended up at a non-traditional school. I hope to buy stock in the school after I graduate to help me pay off my student loans. ;)

Sooooo tired....
What a day. I work nights and go to school. Today was homework day and now I'm at school. I've had about 2 hours of sleep so far today. I used to bounce back from that pretty well. Tonight I feel like it is going to take a couple of days to catch up.
I am also emotionally wrung out. There was an 11 yrs old boy that got lost at a Scouting event last Friday (today is Wednesday). They found him Tuesday morning - alive and in pretty good shape. There was a press conference by his parents this morning. I was listening to it during my commute home after work. There were several times that I found myself getting very emotional. I was lost for about 4-5 hours when I was 10 yrs old. I also have 10 yr old and 13 yr old sons. It wasn't hard to put myself in the place of the parents and feel what it must have been like for them. I found myself hurtling down the highway with my eyes filling up with tears.
Between the 2 situations, I'm hammered.

Heading downhill in a hurry
Had a physical a couple of weeks ago to get ready for Boy Scout summer camp. I am now on medications for ADD, cholesterol, and 2 for Type II Diabetes.
How did I let myself go so far? I ran cross-country in high school! I did the mile swim for Scouts at 10,400 feet in 1983. I ran a 68 second 1/4 mile and a 37 minute 10K.
I am trying to see this as a forced blessing. My oldest is only 13. My youngest is 2. I have a lot of life left - if I take care of myself. I started my meds yesterday. I start exercising when this is post is finished.
I think that with some help from God and my wife, I can use this to change my entire life. I am being compelled to change my physical habits. If I can extend that with the help of my ADD med, I can gain self-control over my work and study habits too. I could become organized and actually have time to spend with my kids!
Stay tuned - it only gets more interesting as we go! :)
